You are cordially invited to the opening of the solo exhibition To Spin, to Crack, to Bind by Kärt Ojavee, which will take place on Friday, 20 December 2024, at 7 p.m. at the KiBela, space for art.
Her exhibition To Spin, to Crack, to Bind features a series of research-driven projects that challenge the boundaries between design and art, focusing on materiality, processes and the passage of time.
Kärt Ojavee is an Estonian artist and designer who blends new technologies with traditional craftsmanship. Her conceptual approach to textiles explores both their historical significance and their potential for future innovation. Alongside her academic research and material experimentation, Ojavee is also a musician, and she designs stage sets and costumes.
Biography
Kärt Ojavee (b. 1982) is an artist and designer. In 2013, Ojavee defended her PhD thesis, Active Smart Interior Textiles: Interactive Soft Displays, which focused on developing a series of hybrid materials and interactive textiles that merge traditional and cutting-edge technologies. Her work often incorporates electronic components that explore future possibilities, emphasizing materials that evolve over time. Ojavee is particularly interested in the transformation of materials and their dynamic relationship with the surrounding environment, highlighting the symbiotic interaction between the two. Since 2014, she has been a senior researcher at the Estonian Academy of Arts. In 2024, she became a professor in the Textile Department and began leading the MA program Craft Studies at the same institution together with Juss Heinsalu.
