Friday, August 26th 2011, MMC KIBLA:
x-op night of tactile art media

20.00 KIBELA, space for art

Exhibition opening and performance entitled Inward/Outward by Estonian artists Evelyn Müürsepp and Mari Jõgiste, and artist John Grzinich.
On display till September 6th 2011.

Evelyn Müürsepp “Shadows of Men”
On display are 5 large scale portraits of amorphous substances accompanied by their source, 5 different men. We can look at these works as abstracted portraits of the deeds, words and actions of these men. Are men shadows of their deeds and words or vice versa, are deeds and words shadows of the men? This is a work in progress, as well as the feminine counterparts that developed.

Mari Jõgiste “The Core”
The Core is a gathering of animations, small-scale encaustic paintings and beeswax sculptures. It explores geometric, natural, abstract and realistic forms and images, to follow the flow of thoughts, while taking the somewhat overexploited symbol of a human heart with all it's meaning and functions as a starting point, while trying to bring a new and more personal meaning to it.

Evelyn Müürsepp + John Grzinich “Sonic Scratch Cycles”
An ongoing series of site-specific investigations whereby the duo engages in a structured improvisation using sound and drawing. John 'sonifies' spaces and landscapes using objects and materials found on site. Evelyn draws what she hears filtered through headphones that record the sounds using binaural microphones that simulate human hearing. The improvisation lasts as long as it takes John to make one 360 degree cycle around Evelyn. The exhibition is arranged in such a way that the sensory roles become inverted, the listener takes the place of the visual creator and the viewer takes the place of the auditory creator. I become you, you become me.

21.00 KIBLA
Nino Mureškič, in this percussion experiment will be playing some of the drums and percussions that have marked his year-long musical engagement. Among others, we will be hearing djembas, frame drums, riq, udu, khartal, and perhaps more.

The exhibition will be on display until 14 July 2011.

Evelyn Müürsepp is a mixed media artist and cultural coordinator, based in Southeast Estonia. Since 2001 she has worked as an artist-organizer, coordinating activities for MoKS, a non-profit residency center and project space. This ongoing life-university has offered an opportunity to learn from artists from all over the world and develop fruitful collaborations in various media. Her recent interest and ongoing work is with drawing where she explores how the repetitive movement of a pen/pencil affects the body and its motion. This surface-body-surface feedback is a generative method to shift from abstraction to figural imagery.

John Grzinich has been conducting his own forms of sound research for over 15 years, including field recording, kinetic sculptures, electro-acoustic composition, performance, group workshops and exercises in listening. Currently he lives in Estonia and works as a program and technical coordinator for MoKS, a non-profit artist-run center. He has published CDs of his sound works on international labels such as: SIRR, Staalplaat, Erewhon, Intransitive, Cut, Elevator Bath, CMR, Orogenetics, Pale Disc and others.

Mari Jõgiste is a visual artist-art teacher who graduated the BA of Fine Arts Department of Tartu University in 2010. She is currently studying for Master's Degree in Fine Arts and Art Education at Tartu University. In her recent paintings and mixed media works she has been exploring the relationship between different mediums such as natural pigments, beeswax, found objects, sound, light etc. Mari has been an active volunteer and member of MoKS since 2005.

Nino Mureškič is a musician, his field is traditional percussions. He has worked with numerous Slovenian and foreign musicians in various international projects and CDs. Specialized in West-African rhythm and eastern techniques of playing frame drums. Studied traditional African drums with master Mamady Keita in Guinea, Eastern and Indian frame drums techniques, riq bendir and traditional Indian percussion with master Glen Velez (NY) and Pt. Suresh Talwalkar (Bombay). His CD Manas is a first author's percussion debut on the Slovenian musical scene.
