Toni Kitanovski in Cherkezi orchestraJazz season 2007 started with a true sensation: a feverish trumpet band that is one of the most excellent Roma groups uniting three generations of great solo performers from the Ćerkez family.

TONI KITANOVSKI & CHERKEZI ORCHESTRA (Macedonia)

The most recognizable one, the “father” of the band, seventy year old trumpet player Ćerkez Rašid accompanied many famous Macedonian musicians on their path of fame. One of them is Esma Redžepova. Notorious film direktor Emir Kusturica invited them to participate in his films, star Manu Chao to participate in his concerts. They truly blossomed when they met guitarist Toni Kitanovski in the tea house of old bazaar in Skopje. This coincidence brought to life one of the most exciting and energetic bands of Europe incited with original melodies and funk rhythms that brings together two very different traditions: Roma music and jazz. Both traditions originate in march music, one in the bands of New Orleans, the other in Turkish army orchestras that were often conducted by Roma people.
If the Balkan is the home of Roma trumpeters, then without a doubt the Ćerkezi family are the living proof that music has no borders.
