Rashanim - the concert »Happy new ears« and welcome to the third concert of the first jazz package in 2006!
Kibla and Narodni dom presented you the best of jazz and rock music, this time with a special emphasis on the electrical guitar and explosive performances. Nothing better could have happened to the New York "klezmer" after The Klezmatics - Rashanim - is a jazz trio with rock undertones that seeks inspiration in the cult albums of John Zorn.
Mali oder Narodni dom (Little stage of ND) – Friday, 3th of February 2006, 20:30 (8.30pm) RASHANIM (USA)
Jon Madof – el.guitar Shanir Blumenkranz – el. bass Mathias Künzli – drums, percussions
In a unique and passionate way, with Eastern melodies, indie-rock and downtown jazz influences Rashanim trio plays through Jewish melodies. John Zorn was so enthusiastic about the group that he published their first album and invited them to remake his legendary Masada albums that brought about three more albums and introduced the trio in a more universal and dynamic light than ever before. What Rabih Abou-Khalil did for Arabian music, Rashanim are doing for Jewish tradition.
They are a hot band from a New York Jewish renaissance, that jumps from rock music into Jewish jazz, from classical music intto world-beat and plays familiar melodies in a way they sound »cool«.
The leader of the group is Jon Madof who collaborated with musicians such as John Zorn, Marc Ribot, Frank London and numerous others in the New York scene. Sensual melodiousness of his guitar derives from Jim Hall tradition, in louder parts (namely, this is the meaning of the word Rashanim in Hebrew) it reminiscents of Jimmy Hendrix, this innovative approach to tradition is what enraptures public the most. www.rashanim.com
