The Hidden Life project places Gašper Torkar's sonic expression in a new context of audiovisual performance. With it, the author wants to present the starting point and, at the same time, the goal of his musical creation, which he sees in hidden. A mystery as something beneath the surface, but at the same time, it is always inclined to be revealed. A mystery as a place of autonomy that breaks and pierces public life. Like a magic trick based on the beauty of an undisclosed mystery, the music itself remains a mystery that fascinates us with its immediacy and difficulty when we want to put it into words. The acousmatics of Torkar's music only intensifies this alienation, which plants a seed of doubt out of which the listener’s imagination grows.
From the beginning of his performances, Gašper Torkar's music has been trying to avoid genre restrictions. We can feel the influences of modern exploratory approaches that are comfortable with using new technologies and composing without forgetting the impressionistic and emotive dimensions of sound. Since his initial appearances as part of the Klubski maraton (Club Marathon), his performance has evolved into an increasingly formed world of science fiction, in which immersive cacophony is just as important as the silence or melodic echo that follows.
Gašper Torkar is a composer and poet who lives and works in Ljubljana. Over the past few years, he has created music for numerous theatrical exhibitions, video and art installations, and performances. He has released two pieces of music – Dreams of Others (2017) and Accept the Risk and Continue (2021) at the home label Kamizdat. In collaboration with the director Jan Krmel, he wrote music for numerous theatrical performances, the last two in the 2020/2021 season for SNG Drama Maribor – Celebration and The Cat on the Hot Tin Roof. As a composer, he is currently actively involved in a series of art installations of the FaceOrFactory project by duo Aljaž Rudolf and Eva Smrekar, production by Kapelica Gallery (2020–). Before the pandemic, he organized NANI MO music events at the Monokel Club dedicated to the new approaches to club music. As a poet, he published his debut at LUD Literatura called Podaljšano bivanje (2013). From 2014 to 2016, he was a member of the editorial board of the literary magazine IDIOT. He's currently writing his second book of poetry.
