New Slovenian Music – NSG: Gašper Drev and Maj Husar New Slovenian Music – NSG: Gašper Drev and Maj Husar Thursday, 9 December 2021, at 8 p.m. MMC KIBLA
On Thursday, 9 December 2021, at 8 p.m., we invite you to MMC KIBLA to a concert by Gašper Drev and Maj Husar, as part of the New Slovenian Music NSG cycle.
Although Gašper Drev and Maj Husar are no strangers to the public, they are still young and their guitar and bass duet sounds very much fresh. Just like a spring morning. Or a late summer evening. They also sound warm as they build harmonic structures on melodies, pass them to each other and support each other's musicianship while emphasizing the underlying theme with tonal turns on guitar or bass rounding the compositions. As the musical piece comes to an end, it evokes in us a reflection about what we've actually heard, the impressions are layered, the influences of different kinds of music blending... perhaps some melodic jazz, or post-rock, maybe an instrumental suitable for vocal additions or even some wider instrumentation.
In addition to their own project, Gašper and Maj also work independently and collaborate with other musicians in various forms. Their concerts are proof that musical creativity is very much present in our region and that any doubts about its future are superfluous. After generations of accomplished musicians, who have blended into each other in the fields of classical and contemporary music, to which I add the contemporary »classical« and of course jazz, rock, and e-music with all its derivatives and sub-genres, in this day of age, the duo manages to warm your hearts with their approach to composing, stringing, and delivering music.
After graduating from the Maribor Conservatory where he played piano, Gašper Drev is now in his fifth year of study with Samo Šalamon (electric guitar, bass guitar). A year and a half ago, he released his first album, featuring his original compositions. After his beginnings in rock music, he shifted his attention to jazz. At the end of December 2020, he and his jazz trio made a short video with jazz standards, which was broadcast on YouTube. He is also constantly creating original music. His musical creativity has also been recognized and rewarded with first prizes at the Prešeren competitions of the II. gimnazija Maribor (II. Middle Gymnasium Maribor) in the school years 2018/19, 2018/20, and 2020/21. In the last year, the COVID-19 pandemic prevented his already arranged performances. However, as part of the Narodni dom project The Five Before Twelve, he and Maj performed an array of jazz standards on the balcony on Poštna Street 1 on 15 May 2021 and at the Moja kavarna bar on 6 August 2021.
Maj Husar has been playing bass for seven years and has performed in several ensembles. For 4 years he played in Drug' orkester (the orchestra of II. gimnazija Maribor), for 3 years in the band Among Twisted, with whom he performed several times (among others at Štuk), and for the last two years, he has been learning jazz with Samo Šalamon.
Admission is free. You can attend the event in accordance with the RVT protocol and NIJZ recommendations. __ Production: ACE KIBLA Co-organisation: X-OP Association for Contemporary Art The concert is part of the New Slovenian Music - NSG cycle, supported by the Ministry of Culture and the Municipality of Maribor.
