Guitarist Derek Bailey who sadly passed away last year and who can be without a doubt placed among the greatest musical innovators of all times once said that »improvisation is the main principle of musical creation«. Whether we speak of John Lee Hooker, John Coltrane or Sonic Youth –music withers, fades when it's not inspired with eternally changeable, adaptable and completely personal substance called improvisation. A lot of times improvisation is thought about as a sign of weakness, but it is in truth a driving power, a core and a sign of excellence of most of the good music even though it is as (seemingly) diverse as on this year's Izzven: from ecstatic free jazz, dob-blues, funk, rock guitars and chamber music.
